Timber Framing

Timber framing is a time-tested ancient natural building technique that uses durability as its main ecological principle. The use of recycled, reclaimed or ecologically harvested timber is an excellent opportunity to reduce the environmental impact of your construction project. In New Mexico we have the opportunity to use local fire killed trees for construction. Local forests provide a low embodied-energy resource that is renewable. With the implementation of ecological harvesting practices, and forest thinning for fire protection, our forests will continue to provide excellent building materials for future generations.

Our team utilizes the ancient craft of all wood joinery, featuring mortise and tenon connections held together by hardwood pegs. Along with traditional styles, we have developed a unique style of timber joinery displaying trees in their natural forms joined with milled beams and/or other natural timbers. These exciting architectural features express power, beauty and grace, inspiring and enriching people's lives.

Some of the oldest human-built structures on our planet are timber frames. In Europe, timber framed houses in use today date back to the 1300's. And in parts of Asia, ancient timber frame temples over 1700 years old still stand in near perfect condition.

Post and beam construction with timber is a perfect compliment to natural wall systems like straw bale and light-clay. The integration of a timber structure for roof support and a thick natural wall creates an aesthetic, which is comforting and beautiful.
