Earthen Floors & Plasters
Earthen floors and plasters are very similar in composition - the same ratio of clay, sand and chopped straw. Floors of this type are poured in a moist consistency and worked with a trowel until a finish is attained, similar to concrete. They are allowed to dry and are then sealed with a type of natural oil finish. They are extremely beautiful, durable if executed properly and feel much softer and warmer than concrete floors. They can incorporate radiant floor heat very easily. Earthen plasters are applied to the walls with a similar technique. The appearance of finish plasters can vary as far as your imagination will take it. The various natural pigments and fine clays available to work with are nearly endless. Fine sand, mica and finely chopped straw can be added in various amounts to achieve different colors and qualities.
