Arroyo Verde Community Center

New construction of an eco-conscious community center

Designer: Archaeo Architects and Druc Engineering

Builder: Palo Santo Designs LLC

The kiva was a unique and exciting project. About half of the structure is bermed under ground. The walls are constructed of Durisol ICF, a recycled wood chip and Portland cement composite block, which is both insulating and able to retain earth structurally. It is easily water proofed and easy to plaster. The special roof structure is modeled after the traditional yurt roof structure, with a compression ring in the cent, with skylight, and 12 viga beams radiating out in all directions to the reinforced concrete tension ring around the wall perimeter. The entire interior is plastered with local earthen plaster, and a traditional sealed earthen floor is the finished floor. The structure will be used as a community center for the residents of an ecological housing development, which is in process of being built around the area. Further permaculture based landscaping of the exterior is underway at this time. Stay posted for updates on our continued work within this eco-development.
